DIRECTOR JOSHUA MICHAEL STERN

Joshua Michael Stern is a visionary American filmmaker whose work reflects a rare blend of emotional intelligence, political insight, and cinematic craftsmanship. As a director, writer, and producer, Stern has consistently drawn top-tier talent and delivered critically recognized films and television with both commercial appeal and artistic depth.

Stern made his directorial debut with the haunting and imaginative Neverwas, a psychological fantasy drama starring Ian McKellenNick NolteJessica Lange, Alan Cumming and Aaron Eckhart. The film showcased his early affinity for deeply human stories told with mythic resonance — attracting powerhouse performances from actors who rarely take on first-time directors. The film also featured the late Brittany Murphy, rounding out a cast drawn to Stern’s layered, literary approach to storytelling.

He followed with the politically charged dramedy Swing Vote, a prescient and witty exploration of democracy and disenfranchisement that positioned Kevin Costner as an everyman who holds the fate of a presidential election in his hands. The film demonstrated Stern’s growing confidence with both scale and tone, balancing political commentary with heartfelt comedy. Backed by a formidable cast including Dennis HopperStanley Tucci, and Paula PattonSwing Vote cemented Stern’s reputation for drawing bold performances from elite talent — and for delivering complex ideas in accessible, audience-friendly packages.

In 2013, Stern directed and produced Jobs, the biographical drama chronicling the rise of Apple co-founder Steve Jobs. The film starred J.K. Simmons, Josh Gad and Ashton Kutcher in a career-defining dramatic turn, alongside Dermot Mulroney  and Lukas Haas. With Jobs, Stern proved his command of true-story storytelling with commercial potential, capturing the contradictions and charisma of one of the most iconic figures of the tech era. The film marked a new chapter in Stern’s career, bridging biopic with boardroom drama — always with a human pulse.

Stern further honed his voice for politically infused narrative in television, creating and showrunning Graves for EPIX, starring Nick Nolte as a former U.S. President reckoning with his legacy. The series blended satire, soul, and redemption in equal measure — and underscored Stern’s mastery of genre-blending and character complexity. The ensemble cast included Sela WardNia Vardalos, and Ernie Hudson, again affirming Stern’s ability to attract and collaborate with award-winning, cross-genre talent.

Stern has also developed films with many actors, as well as his own adaptation of King Lear with Anthony Hopkins and is also developing a drama with Uma Thurman.
